Revolutionary Alternative to Spinal Surgery Featured on WFAA-TV

(PRWEB) August 23, 2011

The AccuraScope procedure -- a revolutionary alternative to spinal surgery -- is being featured on WFAA-TV. North American Spine, committed to helping patients stay abreast of cutting edge treatments, offers education on this safe, effective and minimally invasive treatment.

Unlike traditional spinal surgery, the AccuraScope procedure does not cut through healthy muscle and tissue. ?The damage done during spinal surgery can often be more of a predicament for the patient than the back pain they?re trying to alleviate,? says Sam Bailey, Ph.D., chairman of North American Spine.

During the 30- to 45-minute outpatient AccuraScope procedure, physicians access the spinal canal through a three-millimeter incision into the sacral hiatus?a natural opening at the base of the spine. A thin tube equipped with a high-definition camera and laser is then inserted into the small opening. ?The physician is able to see in color and in real time what is actually causing the patient?s back pain?problems that may not even show up in an MRI?and correct them in one procedure,? Bailey says. ?We can get into the facet joints, treat herniated and bulging discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, any problems associated with lower back pain.? Patients are typically released one hour after the procedure, walk the same day and return to normal activity within one week.

Also included in the segment is Aaron Edwards, a patient who has been able to return to weight lifting and other activities following the AccuraScope procedure. ?I was walking the night of the procedure,? Edwards says. ?I was at my son?s football game two days later. Just being able to do things that I enjoy like playing golf, tennis, play with my kids, get in and out of a car was the big thing for me.?

To date, North American Spine?s partner physicians have performed more than 5,000 AccuraScope procedures. Individuals who want to know more about the minimally invasive AccuraScope procedure can watch Living the Healthy Life at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24 or 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 28 on WFAA-TV, or visit http://www.northamericanspine.com.

By entering the spinal canal through the sacral hiatus?a natural opening at the base of the spine?physicians can directly view inflamed and damaged tissues with a high-definition scope and immediately treat problem areas with a laser.

North American Spine?s technologically advanced approach allows physicians to treat multiple lumbar levels in a single procedure, with a single incision. Most importantly, it enables countless individuals to enjoy life pain free.
